What is AAHA Accreditation?

The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) is a non-profit organization that sets the standard for veterinary excellence. They have been accrediting animal hospitals since 1933 and currently accredit over 3,500 clinics in the United States and Canada. To become accredited, a veterinary hospital must undergo a rigorous evaluation process that includes over 900 standards of veterinary care. These standards cover all aspects of a clinic's operations, from medical care to client service.

List of Standards for AAHA Accreditation

Medical Records

Accredited clinics must maintain accurate and complete medical records for all patients. These records must include a detailed medical history, physical examination findings, diagnostic test results, and treatment plans. The records must also be easily accessible and kept confidential.

Anesthesia and Surgery

Accredited clinics must have protocols in place for the safe administration of anesthesia and the performance of surgery. This includes monitoring equipment, trained staff, and proper pain management techniques.

Pain Management

Pain management is an important aspect of veterinary care, and accredited clinics must have protocols in place to assess and manage pain in their patients. This includes the use of appropriate pain medications and techniques for both acute and chronic pain.

Client Service

In addition to providing excellent medical care, accredited clinics must also prioritize client service. This includes maintaining a clean and comfortable waiting area, providing clear and thorough communication with clients, and offering convenient appointment scheduling options.

Continuing Education

The field of veterinary medicine is constantly evolving, and accredited clinics must stay up-to-date with the latest advancements and techniques. This is why the AAHA requires accredited clinics to participate in continuing education programs and encourage their staff to pursue further education and training.

Facility and Equipment

Accredited clinics must have a clean and well-maintained facility that meets all safety and sanitation standards. They must also have the necessary equipment and technology to provide high-quality care to their patients.
